Decommissioned

Kappa was decommissioned on June 12th, 2015 and replaced by the Gamma cluster.

Kappa

Kappa is a Linux-based cluster with 366 compute nodes and a combined peak performance of 27 TFLOPS.

Each compute node (HP DL170h) is equipped with two quad-core processors of type Intel® Xeon® E5520 and 24 or 72 GB RAM.

Each of the two “huge” nodes (HP DL980) has 1024 GB RAM and eight processors of CPU type Intel® Xeon® E7-2800 which have eight cores each, giving 64 cores in total.

Computing services provided by Kappa

  • Running traditional HPC batch jobs, submitted from the login node (“head node”)
  • Interactive use of compute nodes (for e.g test, development or to run graphical applications)
  • HPC jobs with custom (“green-style”) job scheduling (guaranteed node access and risk jobs, for selected projects only)

Research performed with Kappa

Kappa is open for users within Linköping University.

History

  • 2009 - Kappa was installed as a shared SNIC/LiU system
  • 2012 - SNIC funding for Kappa ended, Kappa was kept operating as a LiU-only system.
  • June 12th, 2015 - Kappa retired and replaced by the Gamma system

Who can use Kappa?

Access to Kappa is granted by NSC. Local researchers at Linköping university can apply for computing time on Kappa. See applying for a new project for details.
